The Center for Digital Storytelling

When I visited the Art Education program at UT-Austin earlier this year, the faculty had just returned from a 3-day workshop with The Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS). They said it was one of the most rewarding, exciting and challenging things they had ever done. I'd like to share this valuable educational resource with you.

Since this is your last blog assignment, I'm going to ask a minimum of questions, with the expectation that you will stretch out (if you haven't already) as a writer responding to the very rich possibilities of Digital Storytelling.  If you truly desire to become a teacher, this material should be of great interest you.

Question #1:
First, go to the "About" drop-down menu and select "What we Do" section of the CDS website. What are the main tenets of the organization's philosophy?

Question #2:
Why is listening hard? Draw from your own personal experience.

Question #3:
What kinds of workshops does the CDS offer?

Question #4:
Watch a Digital Story on the CDS Youtube channel and answer the following questions:

a. Who is the storyteller? (name, approximate age, profession (if known), ethnicity, nationality).
c. What story is told?
d. What did the storyteller learn from the experience their story describes and relates?
e. What did you learn from the story?

Thank you and have a fantastic summer!!!!

  1. 1. They have many tenets of their philosophy.
    a) Everyone has many stories to tell.
    b) Listening is hard.
    c) People see, hear, and perceive the world in different ways.
    d) Creative activity is human activity.
    e) Technology is a powerful instrument of creativity.
    f) Sharing stories can lead to positive change.

    2. There are many reasons why listening is hard. From my experience, I have realized that I have 3 main problems that get in the way of listening to others.
    1) I am distracted by other things.
    2) I am not interested in what the other person has to say, but I should listen and give them respect anyways because there is a reason they are sharing this information with me.
    3) I am too busy thinking about my response to that person. I have had many times when somebody is telling me something as simple as their name, and I am too busy anticipating introducing myself to them that I don't even let their name sink into my brain.

    3. The CDS offers many different types of workshops.
    a) Standard workshop
    b) Educator workshop
    c) Embodied story workshop
    d) Stories-for-Health workshop
    e) iPhone workshop
    f) Snapshot story workshop
    g) Facilitator in training workshop
    h) Certificate program

    4. a) The story is being told by a woman named Wynne Maggi. She seems to be in her early 20s. She is doing research for her dissertation. I think she is American.
    b) She is telling the story of the birth of a young boy. After he is brought back home, he becomes sick and the observer is torn between what she could do and what she should do.
    c) The story teller learned that when it comes to the health of other people, you should do what you need to do to help versus what others tell you.
    d) I learned that when it comes to helping others, you should always go with your guy instinct. It may not always mean the difference between life and death, but it can change the outcome of a situation for the better.

  2. 1. The Center for Digital Storytelling supports people in sharing the stories of their lives from a first-person narrative point of view. The creation of the story is just as important as the stories themselves. They value that everyone has stories to tell. Also, they recognize that it can be difficult to listen to people’s stories but that it can be very rewarding to do so. They believe that the world is perceived by people in many different ways. Another belief they have places importance on creative expression. They also believe in the utilization of technology. We have access to advanced video technologies that can be used for the creative process. Finally, they believe that the sharing of these stories can make a real difference in the world.

    2. Listening can be very hard because sometimes we do not want to hear what other’s have to say. Maybe we have our own reservations and preconceived notions that prevent us from wanting to hear what other people have to say. My best friend is a very stubborn person especially when it comes to driving and directions. She always feels like she is right and knows where she is going, but she often makes mistakes and gets turned around. However, she does not like to be told that she did something wrong. She has a hard time listening to those around her when they are trying to tell her where she needs to be going. I think oftentimes people get stuck in thinking they know the best way and they do not like to feel like they are doing something wrong. Even though it can be easier to just give in and listen to others, many people find this very hard.

    3. The CDS offers several public workshops. There is the Standard, Educator, Embodied Story, Stories-for-Health, iPhone, Snapshot Story, Facilitator in Training, and Certificate Program Workshops. They range from people creating their own digital stories to workshops that are designed for K-12 teachers to integrate the digital stories into the classroom. The workshops also reach to professions in healthcare as well as theater and dance. The workshops may focus on the story or the tools used to assemble the story. The workshops range from simple to complex and from basic to advanced. There is really something for everyone.

    4. a.The storyteller is Leroy Moore, an older man probably in his late sixties. He is a Caucasian man that grew up in the Dallas area.
    c. He told his own personal story of being abused by his father as a child. He talked about the pain felt from the welts that were created. He told of the moment when he refused to continue living with such abuse. He fought back against his father, hanging deadweight from his father’s neck. He was later in his life reminded of this moment in being trained in nonviolence manners. He realized that a “seed” had been planted in him for nonviolence.
    d. The storyteller was able to learn about discerning moments in one’s life. When he took a stand at 16 against the abuse of his father, he could not have known that that moment would plant in him the notion for nonviolence. However, it was a memorable moment that brought great emotions to him and showed him meaning behind the experience.
    e. I learned that hurtful and emotional moments can be life changing experience and they can really make a difference in your life. The difference they make may be good or bad but it will surely be memorable.

  3. 1.The main tenets of this organization’s philosophy are everyone has a story to tell, listening is hard, people see hear and perceive the word differently, creative activity is human activity, technology is a powerful instrument of creativity, and lastly sharing stories can lead to positive change.

2.The organization’s site suggests that listening is hard because people are either too distracted or too impatient to listen to others. I agree with this, but I also think people can simply be too self-absorbed. As a society we are so worried about getting our own thoughts across that we don’t give others the time to express their ideas to us. Or if others are talking we are thinking about what we are going to say in response instead of really listening to what he/she is saying. I know this is why I am so bad at remembering people’s names. When I am being introduced to a group of people I tend to hear their name in one ear and then it goes right out the other. I think this happens because I am so worried about articulating my own name so they can hear it. As a whole I think our society could learn to be more interested and concerned with others rather than ourselves.

3.CDS offers the following workshops: standard workshop, educator workshop, embodied story workshop, stories-for-health workshop, iPhone workshop, snapshot story workshop, facilitator in training workshop, and the certification program. From what I can understand from the website all of these workshops are offered to the general public.

    4.A) Name: Ron Krabill
Age: not told, but I would guess late 20’s or early 30’s
    Profession: not known
    Ethnicity: Caucasian
    Nationality: American
    B) Ron tells a story about his father. He describes his father, how he saw him as a boy growing up. His father was a doctor, everyone in the town knew him. The one story he chooses to share specifically is when someone called the house asking for Bill. He said that there was no one there by that name. Ron’s brothers and sisters told him that was what people called their dad. He points out the fact that he didn’t even know the name others referred to his dad by. It goes on to tell that now he is dying and Ron and his dad are now sitting while his dad tells stories of when he was young.
    C) I think Ron learned that there was so much more to his father than just what he saw or assumed about his dad. There were stories uncharacteristic of the father he knew, stories of a younger version of his dad. I think Ron learned to appreciate these stories and understand that it is possible for his dad to have more than one side to himself.
    D) For me this story point outs how everyone has multiple sides to themselves. No one is simply one sided, people are complex and interesting. We can’t only learn one side of people and then decided that is how they are to be defined the rest of their lives. We have be to open to learn more about others than what we see on the surface, we need to look further to really appreciate a person fully.

  4. 1. Everyone has many stories to tell, Listening is hard, People see, hear, and perceive the world in many different ways, Creative activity is human activity, Technology is a powerful instrument of creativity, Sharing stories can lead to positive changes.
    2. Listening can be hard because there is often many things going on in our own lives. We have also become such a selfish culture because we often just want to talk about ourselves and our problems instead of listening to others and their problems. I am often caught up in facebook or a text message conversation to really listen to what those around me are saying.
    3. CDS offers workshops for anyone of any interest level. From beginner 2 day workshops to intense certification programs. There are also education programs for teachers looking to impalement CDS in their teaching and classroom.
    4. A. Wynne Maggi
    b. The author looks at the details of the Pakistani people in a rural village and their culture.
    c. The story teller learned to appreciate the details of the village and how to be a part of the observation as well as just observing it.
    d. I learned that people can be truly happy with what little they have and they are able to enjoy what they have to fullest, more often than those who have it all.

  5. Question #1:
First, go to the "About" drop-down menu and select "What we Do" section of the CDS website. What are the main tenets of the organization's philosophy?
    • Everyone has a story and should tell it
    • Listening is a tough thing to do and we have to work at it
    • There are many different perspectives and we should be open to all
    • Humans are creative by nature
    • We should use technology for better good and changing the world
    • Telling your story can help others out or give them hope

    Question #2:
Why is listening hard? Draw from your own personal experience.
Listening is hard because it is something that one most learns to do. OF course we all can hear but not everyone can listen. Listen takes time and effort along with patience and respect. It is hard to block out the “voices” in your head enough to stop and really hear other people. Personally, it is hard for me because I like to talk and really have to focus on what other have to offer instead of just thinking about what I would say.

    Question #3:
What kinds of workshops does the CDS offer?
    *Standard Workshop
    *Educator Workshop
    * Embodied Story Workshop
    *Stories for Health Workshop
    *iPhone Workshop
    *Snapshot Story Workshop
    *Facilitator In training Workshop
    *Certificate Program
I would love to go to the Educator Workshop, I think it would be an unique experience.

    Question #4:
Watch a Digital Story on the CDS Youtube channel and answer the following questions:

    a. Who is the storyteller? (name, approximate age, profession (if known), ethnicity, nationality).
Postcards to Kate, Leigh Hinton, around 40, white, USA
    c. What story is told? These are postcard that she sent to her daughter who was working in Japan. She sewed them with lots of meaning behind it, such as themes like wisdom, and places that her daughter sent her. She did this because she missed her daughter and didn’t want to be forgotten.
    d. What did the storyteller learn from the experience their story describes and relates? The storyteller learned that the process of art helped her not be so lonely and get through the time without her daughter.
    e. What did you learn from the story? I learned that there are many ones to get through loneliness. Growing up as an Army Brat I was always missing my father, old friends, and relatives. This would have been an interesting way to cope with that.

  6. 1. The main tenets of the CDS’s philosophy are everyone has many stories to tell, listening is hard, People see, hear, and perceive the world in different ways, creative activity is human activity, Technology is a powerful instrument of creativity, and sharing stories can lead to positive change. This organization has been running for nearly twenty years and the life behind them is amazing. They want people to help people by sharing their stories. The see the change possible in the future of everyone by just telling individual stories.

    2. “Most people are either too distracted, or too impatient, to be really good listeners.” This is why the CDS believes listening is hard. I whole heartedly agree. We live in a busy world where we are constantly on the move and busy planning our next move. People don’t take the time to listen and truly understand. A good example is when you pass someone in the grocery store or where ever else you may be; you say hi and how are you as you pass them, so do you even hear their response? Probably not, and they probably were not waiting to hear yours either. We’ve become so wrapped up in our own lives and what we have to get done, that we don’t care about others like we should.

    3. The CDS offers a variety of different workshops. These include educator’s workshops, standard workshops, snapshot story workshops and many more. The one that interests me the most is the Iphone workshop. We live in such a technology based society and offering these kinds of workshops is only to our advantage. As teachers we need to stay on top of technology to keep the interest of our kids.

    4. I watched the video “Postcards to Kate”. The story tellers name is Leigh Hinton, Kate’s mother. She tells the story of her sending these 52 postcards that she handmade to her daughter in Japan while she studied abroad for a year. One postcard each week. She hand stitched the postcards each with a different theme. She spent tedious time sewing these and making them look beautiful. She said she realizes now that they were curing her lonesome while Kate was gone. They helped her get through the time. I learned what we’ve been learning all year; art is so many different things to different people. To this woman it was helpful in waiting for her daughter to return home from Japan.

  7. 1,) The main tenets of the organization are everyone has stories to tell, listening is hard, people see, hear, and perceive the world in different ways, creative activity is human activity, technology is a powerful instrument of creativity and sharing stories can lead to positive change.

2.) I think listening is hard because often times we are too busy in our own lives withour own lives that we feel like we don’t have time to deal with other people’s problems. I know personally that sometimes I think in that selfish way. But also I think sometimes its hard to listen because other peoples stories sometimes remind you of your own and sometimes they are reminders you don’t want to remember. Hard times in your life that you try o forget can easily brought up by the simplest things and it may be hard to listen to people talk about a similar situation without revisiting your own,
3.) The CDS offers a everything from a standard workshop where you create your own digital stories to workshops for educators. Others are aimed at blending the art of video with dance and theater as well as health care professions. I am interested to see what the educators workshop would be like
4.) a.) Sara Prahl is a Caucasian women who appears to be in her 30’s and American
b.) Her story is of her struggle with herself and inner demons after being diagnosed and treated for degenerative MS.
c.) I think the story teller learned that she was stronger than she thought and that she has no choice to be optimistic because she doesn’t want to lose herself to the disease she is trying to keep a sense of what remains of her old self.
d.) I learned that people are all dealing with their own battles and her story really helped put what I thought were big problems in perspective. I saw this quote once that said “we are all in the same game; just different levels. Dealing with the same hell; just different devils.” And I think that describes what I learned from this. Also a major lesson I took from it was to always keep hope because bad things can happened but with hope better things can come through your struggles.

  8. 1) Everyone has many stories to tell
    Listening is hard
People see hear and perceive the world in different ways
    Creative activity is human activity
Technology is a powerful instrument of creativity
Sharing stories can lead to positive change
    2) Well number one, listening is hard. There is a huge difference between listening and hearing something. I believe that listening is hard because unless a person really wants to be fully engaged into what is going on around them, then they are only hearing things and aren’t fully taking everything in and thinking about it. If somebody isn’t interested they are going to be thinking of other things while they “hear” somebody talking. It takes a lot for somebody to be interested to stay fully involved and want to pay attention and listen.
    3) Standard, educator, embodied story, stories for health, iphone, snapshot story, facilitator in training, and certificate programs workshops are what they offer.
    4) The gift of non violence (LeRoy Moore, around 60?, white, Dallas Texas.
    5) The story that was told was, that when he was 16 he decided that he was going to put an end to his dad beating him with a water hose so he grabbed him by the neck and hung his dead what on him taking away his dads energy, later he tells us how this was explained at a non violent training camp and that he says his dad, without realizing it, had planted the seed of non violence.
    6) He learned that though he went through hardships with his father, in the end he gained the gift of nonviolence from the pain he suffered.
    7) I learned that no matter how tough life can get sometimes, there is always a lesson or something positive to take from any situation.

To me, listening is hard because our lives. We are all having stuff go on that we are constantly thinking about. So how are we supposed to shut everything out and focus and listen to something thats maybe, not so important?

  10. 1. I think the main goal these people have is to encourage everyone to share their stories. About their lives and the things they have been through whether it be good or bad. They want people to feel that their stories are important and that people will listen to them. They also are wanting people to do so in a creative way, because as humans we are naturally creative.

    2. According to this website listening is hard because people are often distracted or impatient. I agree with these two reasons, but I also think there are others. I think often times people have trouble listening to others because they often are to concerned with their own issues. I think it's very important to sit back and realize that sometimes we must forget our problems and listen to others.

    3. They offer several different workshops including standard, educator, embodied story, storIes for health, iPhone, and certificate workshops.

    4. Tim Roessler , age unknown , white, profession unknown
He tells the story of his son from ages two to five and how he is already in love and has shared a special friendship with the same little girl for three years.
The father learns from his sons story that maybe people do in fact have soul mates and that his son must have just found his early.
I'd say from hearing this story I agree with what the dad leaned, I think it's a very cute story to share.

  11. 1. The main tenets to the organizations philosophy are as follows:
    A) Everyone has many stories to tell
    B) Listening is hard
    C) People see, hear and perceive the world in different ways
    D) Creative activity is human activity
    E) Technology is a powerful instrument of creativity
    F) Sharing stories can lead to positive change

    2. Listening is hard because people tend to get wraped up in their own drama and their own opinions. Listening can also be hard when the topic doesn't exactly grasp your attention. Sometimes I have a hard time listening in class because what we are discussing in class doesn't always grasp my attention so I tend to go off and daydream.

    3. The CDS offers many different and wonderful types of workshops that from what I have noticed seem to be extremely helpful because everybody learns and listens differently. So these workshops accomdate everyone and caters to their needs.
    A) Standard workshop
    B) Educator workshop
    C) Embodied story workshop
    D) Stories-for-Health workshop
    E) iPhone workshop
    F) Snapshot story workshop
    G) Facilitator in training workshop
    H) Certificate program

    4. A) The story teller is: Medicine woman coming (what her name means, I cannot spell her name),she is a nurse, her ethnicity is indian.
B)The story told is about a woman named Royalty, she is German. She has a really bad skin disease and refuses to take a bath. So the nurse listened to what she wanted to take a bath, which was bubbles. She also had her favorite radio station playing. Then after many sessions, she allowed her body to be massaged by the woman nurse.
C)What the story teller learned from experience: She learned the gift of helping someone else and claimed to have cried because she was filled with such joy. She also said her patient Royalty was taking care of her..I'm assuming that means she was taking care of her heart or emotions.
    D) What I learned from the story: I learned that you must help others in the world and listen to their desires in order to help them to their best. By helping others, you will feel a sense of joy and happiness because you made someone else happy.

People have a lot to deal with in their day-to-day lives; causing them to be busy, and distracted, and overall impatient. When someone is made aware of an issue, they may hear it, but they are not listening. They may hear there is a problem with children going hungry, but they are not listening to what they can do to help.

    Postcards to Kate
Leigh Hinton I’d say mid to late 40s Profession (unknown) Ethnicity: White Nationality: American
Leigh talks about the postcards she handmade and sent to her daughter. Leigh was surprised that the postcards weighed so lightly. For all the effort she put into them was great. I gathered from the story that home is important. Kate was half a world away and her mother wanted to send her a piece of handmade love each week. I find that very special and I would hope my mother, or family member to do something similar.

    2. Listening can be hard or difficult because of the person and their attention span. I personally have dyslexia and there for it is harder for me to listen clearly. I have had teachers not convey clearly enough to me what they expected from me, thus I do not listen to information in the same way other students do.
