Krochet Kids International & Amnesty International for Educators

This week's websites build on the foundation of last week's "Miniature World" video. In your responses to last week's websites, many of you indicated a desire to connect U.S. children with children in others parts of the world. We are fortunate to have the technological tools to facilitate this process. Now, we need to deepen our understanding of the issues faced by a large percentage of the world's children. Only by knowing the issues, and developing a strong sense of empathy and passion, can we become effective educational leaders in our own communities and beyond.

Here are this week's questions. You did a wonderful job answering last week's questions, so please keep doing what you're doing!

Question #1: Krochet Kids International

What do kids actually have to do with Krochet Kids International? Explain how the project works exponentially to improve the lives of women, families and whole communities. Be sure to watch the video, "Meet Betty," and visit the shopping area. If you click on individual hats, you can read what people who bought hats wrote to the women who made them.

Note: This business model has been replicated many times. Empowering women has proven to be one of the most successful strategies in alleviating poverty and strengthening world economies.

Question #2: Amnesty International - USA, Resources for Educators

You have no doubt heard of the organization, Amnesty International. But did you know what it did? Here is your chance to learn about the world's most powerful and respected human rights organization.

a) The link will probably take you directly to the Amnesty International USA website. Be sure to scroll down the page and read the main headlines. You might be surprised to learn that the USA is the only country in the world that sentences children to life in prison. How many people in the US are currently serving life sentences (without the possibility of parole) for crimes they committed before the age of 18?

b) At the top of the Amnesty International - USA home page, you'll see a drop down menu labeled "Find Resources." Click on the arrow and select "Educators." This will take you to the resource section for educators:   http://www.amnestyusa.org/resources/educators
which contains downloadable classroom materials for children of all ages. There are film curriculum guides (for older students), curriculum guides and lesson plans. Click on "Curriculum Guides." Note all the material that is available for free. Which of these materials could be used with elementary school children?

Now, download or click on the curriculum guide, Our World, Our Rights: Teaching about Rights and Responsibilities in the Elementary School (A handbook for learning about the University Declaration of Human Rights). Read the Table of Contents on pp. v-vi (page numbers are at the bottom of each page).
You will see many hands-on activities and stories appropriate for young children. You may want to download this book for future use in the classroom.

c) I'd like you to go to page 3, "Using This Book." Read the whole page. Here it explains what the book sets out to accomplish. A primary objective is to help children develop certain skills and abilities. What are these skills and abilities and what do they have to do with creating a more peaceful world for the future?

d) On the same page (p. 3), read "some points to bear in mind" for teachers. Why does it advise teachers to include more than one area of the world when talking about human right abuses? And why does it encourage using examples of people who are challenging oppression for themselves?

As always, I want you to email me if you have questions or concerns of any kind. I respect your point of view. Please feel free to talk to me if something is weighing on your mind.

Thank you!

  1. 1. Krochet Kids strives to help women and families in Uganda rise above poverty and other struggles prominent in the country. These women, like Betty, are taught how to crochet, and the sale of these hats and other products gives these women money, freedom, education, and life. Betty and these other women are able to help their families, follow their dreams, and change their community. The program has expanded exponentially as “Ugandans are now helping Ugandans.” Krochet Kids International has a vision of education for the future generations “about their ability to bring change to a world that is in need.” The organization seeks to educate and motivate these generations to benefit their community. It was inspiring to hear these women’s stories and see the beautiful work they have been able to create. This program can benefit the present as well as the future generations.

    2.
    a. There are more than 2,500 prisoners in the US serving life sentences for crimes committed before the age of 18.

    b. The book, Our World, Our Rights could be used with elementary children to introduce them to human rights and provide them with activities and resources for exploring these further. Also, the website has elementary level lesson plans that can be utilized in relating the children to their rights as well as introducing them to different cultures and songs. It creates a sense of unity and appreciation for their rights. I especially liked the lesson plan, We Are One Family, which helped give students the background to be responsible and understanding of others.

    c. The book helps children to identify their rights and responsibilities. It intends for children to understand what a right is, learn some of their rights, and learn others rights throughout the world. It also helps them understand the actions needed to defend their rights. In order to create a more peaceful world, the book hopes to instill in the children empathy, cooperation, and negotiation. These skills could help to create a more respectful and understanding world.

    d. Teachers must remember that they cannot shelter their children from the problems that are close to home. We cannot just focus on one part of the world when the problems are everywhere. Children should be aware of what is going on around them as well as throughout the world. The book also encourages teachers to talk about people challenging the oppression. These cases can showcase the bravery of these people and give children hope and excitement for the issues.

  2. 1. Krochet international is an awesome program. It helps kids and women in Uganda have a future. The kids are able to get an education and find ways to brighten their future. Teaching kids and women, like Betty and others, to use resources and skills like crochet to help them succeed. This program gives women a chance to support their family and become something of their own and do something on their own.
    2. A. There are 2500 plus people that are serving life sentences that were convicted when under the age of 18.
    B. The most age appropriate curriculum guided book would be the book, our world, Our Rights. The other books like the kite runner and the activity/book about Darfur I think would be a little intense on kids. I think an excellent lesson plan that could go along with this book is the American Dream that compares pictures with Africa children view and American children views.
    C. Some skills and abilities you want the children to develop is being able to emphasize and cooperate to help better the world. As well as being able to discuss with others in a peaceful manner; I believe one of the main point though would be able to build a consensus about things that are happening in the world. Some things that they will also take from this is the responsibility that we all have and what rights are.
    D. One of the main thing teachers should keep in mind is not to use just one example or to target one group. You don’t want to create a bias. You want to include people challenging oppression because it shows what happens when people take a stand and how that heroic acts can change life’s.

  3. 1. Krochet Kids is a wonderful program that bases all of its creations on the fact that they want to improve poverty and education in their country. The women in the countries are taught the life skill of crocheting and how to market their creations in order to gain a profit for their family. Through this skill, the women, such as Betty, are able to change their lives and their community in ways that seemed so far away. This program truly has the future generations in mind, which makes it absolutely amazing.

    2.
A)There are more than 2,500 people in the US serving life sentences that were convicted before the age of 18.
B)I think that the most age appropriate book is Our World, Our Rights. I believe this because it specifically designed for elementary children, meaning it probably has pictures and scenarios that young children understand. The other books seem to intense or possibly could be used for junior high aged kids.
C)The book has made a strong focus point around the rights of a person. The reason the book wants children to know their rights is because it not only keeps them aware of what they can and cannot do, but it also allows them to see their rights compared to another country's rights. By doing this, essentially a better future for children could take place.
D)Teachers should always remember to use more than one example or one idea so that children understand it is not just a small issue that only happens in one place. The children need to see that it happens everywhere. As a teacher, you want to always make sure to show the positive side to the examples given so that the children are able to learn and grow.

  4. 1. This program works to improve the lives of these women and their families. It provides an opportunity for families to rebuild their lives and move out of poverty, as well as to overcome the government they have been living with. With the extra income of money these families are able to get out of poverty on their own. I think that this is a really neat project because not only are women working to better their lives in their own communities, but it is connecting people globally.

    2. A) There are 2,500 prisoners who have been sentenced to life without parole who are under the age of 18 in the US.
    B) I really like the Service Learning: Lesson Plans and Projects. I think it is because I think children learn more when they are interactive and hands on. With this book it brings human rights to life for children and they can even get involved in helping. This is a great way to involve the class with the community.
    C) The skills this book hopes to develop in children is to empathize, discuss, cooperate, negotiate, and build consensus. With these skills students will become well informed, and involved adults. When abilities like this are instilled early they will grow into useful skills as adults that they can use to become a better citizen of the world.
    D) It is important for teachers to address the abused rights both foreign and actually in the US because students need to be aware that it is not a problem only in other countries. In order for students to become a positive impact on the world, we need them to have a well rounded knowledge of the problems, which includes knowing even the bad qualities of our own country. I think that giving examples of people fighting their own oppression can encourage and guide students on how to fight oppression themselves and make the world a better place.

  5. The women and children in Uganda are impacted by Krochet Kids International because the children are able to receive an education, an opportunity that is hard to come by in Uganda. The women and children are using skills and techniques like crocheting to help themselves and their community, like Betty and many others. This program is giving women and their children the chance to succeed in live and give them independence in their lives. Krochet Kids International is the hope children need in underprivileged towns and is a program that should be spread and integrated in other towns.
    A. More than 2,500 people in the US are in prison for life that was convicted before the age of 18.
    B. The book, Our World, Our Rights can easily be used in elementary schools where it can help introduce the idea of human rights and give activities with resources for the children to do further research. This book is the most appropriate book to give children an idea about community and give them a sense of ownership of their rights. The other books are somewhat intense and maybe not age appropriate, but the book We Are One Family, gives children a better understanding of being responsible of themselves and others.
    C. A person’s human rights are the main point in the book. This is emphasized to give children the knowledge and power of what can and cannot do when compared to another country’s rights. This in return will improve the futures of the children.
    D. Teachers must keep in mind that multiple example and/or ideas are better than one. Children can then grasp the bigger picture that an issue can be bigger than one would initially think. Also as a teacher, it is important to give different perspectives of an issue, so the children will grow to formulate their own opinion of an issue at hand. By forming a bias, the children will learn by example. They will see what effects happen if a person takes a stand and the reaction it can cause.

  6. 1. The Krochet Kids International project is an inspiring one. They are working to enhance to the lives of the people who have been living in less than perfect worlds. These kids are getting the education they deserve, and these women are able to express themselves individually through this project. It gives hope to people who had none, and allows for a worldwide connection. Seeing what some of the people who purchased these hats had to say to the women was an easy way to see how something so simple can bring such joy and we need to continue this kind of behavior to better the communities.

    2. a. There are more than 2,500 prisoners in the US serving life sentences for crimes committed before the age of 18.

    b. The book Our World, Our Rights could be used as an introduction to human rights with elementary aged kids. Most of the other material would not be considered age appropriate and wouldn’t help enhance their learning. This book however could help start to involve kids at a young age (elementary) with what is going on around the world and what they can do to help.

    c. Information on human rights is the main point of the book. It can help kids to understand what they are allowed and not allowed to do. The sooner they understand that, the more proactive they can become in the community and the more involved they will most likely stay as adults. The earlier kids learn things, the better they are at implementing them later on.

    d. If teachers only include one example of oppression faced in another country kids may begin to assume that’s what it is like everywhere. There needs to be clear distinction between the different kinds of oppression experienced all over the world; this way kids will have a better understanding of the world around them.

  7. 1. The children are associated with Krochet Kids International in the since that the program benefits their lives tremendously. The women who are making the hats are receiving money which is then allowing them to provide children with and educations. The children that are getting an education will be able to impact their future and the future of Uganda in a huge way. After watching the “Meet Betty” video I was able to understand how much impact this organization has on these communities, and how much it is helping the women and the children of Uganda. The project allows the people in the community to have an income that supplies them with many things that are necessary for survival and for any kind of future for themselves and their children.

    2.
    A. There are over 2500 people in prison for life with out parole for crimes committed before the age of 18.

    B. For young children I think the book “Our World, Our Rights” would be most appropriate. This book is designed for elementary age children and is written in a way for young children to understand the basics of their rights. I think it is very important that children are aware of there rights from a very young age. Everyone should be aware of their rights, especially children. I think this book would be a great foundation for young children everywhere to begin to learn about human rights.

    C. The main skills and abilities the book is focused on teaching include the ability to recognize what a right is and what they look like in their daily lives, the responsibilities that come with certain rights, and what action they may take to defend their right. Through the ability to discuss, cooperate, and negotiate in the future the children are more likely to live in a peaceful world in the years to come.

    D. They advise teachers to include other parts of the world, as well as close to home to help the children understand that these problems are happening. In areas close to them as well as in countries far away. That it is happening everywhere. The book includes a paragraph advising teachers to include examples from people challenging impression for themselves so that children are able to see personal experience from others and to learn about their bravery.

  8. 1. Krochet Kids International is an amazing program! It provides the children and their mothers a chance to grow in society. When a hat is sold, the money goes back to the mother, she then can provide for her child an education, better food and an overall quality of life. The program plants the idea in a kids mind that they can have a better life. They then will want to pass on this message and do something about it, strengthening their nations future as a whole!
    2. A: 2,500 are in prison for life for crimes that they committed before they turned 18!
B: "Our World, Our, Rights" is honestly I feel the only age appropriate material for a child in elementary school. Also, it was made for a childs' future understanding in the first place. Children are at the prime time of their life that these understanding grounds need to be established because they experience it first hand. As the book states "Children in the United States have experienced freedom of thought, conscience, and religion; the right to education; and the right to movement. Many also though have experience of their rights being denied through bullying name-calling or more serious abuse." They must learn what is acceptable behavior and what is not.
C: This book wants children to learn, what a "right" actually is, examples of this in their typical every day life, what responsibilities they are taking on when they receive this right, and how they should defend their rights appropriately. The book also hopes to better develop the childs' ability to empathize, discuss, cooperate and negotiate with others, and build a sense of consensus. All of these things will create a more balanced and calm understanding between people of the world.
D: In the "points to bear in mind" section it says to include more than one area of the world. Its important to clarify specific examples for children that way they a concept to actually grasp and envision. Providing pictures or videos of this I believe would be very beneficial to this as well!

  9. 1. Everytime a hat or product is sold the money is returned to the community (women and mothers) that made it. The children take apart in this in that they benefit from the money. The money made is used to better their schools and their everyday lives.

    2.
    A) Over 2,500.
B)Our World, Our Rights would be best for elementry school aged children.
    C) The book teaches children about the rights of people and also shows emphasis on how children can better understand their own rights.
    D) The book wants to encourage teachers to teach and give examples of places around the world, as well as near home. Some countries differ greatly from america and it is important that children can learn diversity at a young age.

  10. 1.The Krochet Kids International is an outstanding program that improves lives of women and their families in Uganda. The program teaches the women and children skills such as crocheting to better improve their lives and make a living. Like Betty her life has changed thanks to The Krochet Kids International and has been able to change her community. This program is a value able source to allowing the women in Uganda to rise out of poverty.
2.A: There are 2,500 prisoners who have been sentenced to life without parole who are under the age of 18 in the United States.
    B. The material I would pick would be the book Our World, Our Rights. I think this book would be easy for the children to understand. This book is the most appropriate for children and it would introduce the idea of community and give them a sense of themselves. The other books may be too frightening for children.
C: The main point of the book was a person’s human rights and what that means. It can help the children understand there are things they are allowed to do and not allowed to do. It is always better to learn early so the sooner the children understand that concept the more understanding they can be.
D: Teaching the children in different ways is really beneficial because they learn in different ways. It is also important to teach in different ways as well so the student can start to form his own thoughts on things. Children sometimes have a greater understanding of things then you think they will be able to so it’s important to clarify things.

  11. 1) The Krochet Kids International is a non profit organization that was founded to help families in other countries rise above poverty and provide for their families. When they make a product the money is given to them so they can provide for their families.
    2)
    a) Over 2500 people in prison for life due to crimes committed before the age of 18.
b)Our World, Our Rights is most appropriate for elementary school aged students.
c)The book's objective is to show children their rights of citizens so they are aware and knowledgeable of them at a young age.
    d) teachers should never neglect a chance to make sure they educate their students of issues not only going on around them but in other parts of the world. The book wants to make sure that teachers are making sure they teach of different cultures so the students realize how much diversity is around them.

  12. Three high school kids started Krochet Kids. This company allows for women in Uganda to crochet hats for people all over the world to purchase in order to provide them with an income. This not only supplies a source of money for these women and their families, but inspires them to make better lives for themselves, which in turn inspires their community.
    A) I couldn’t find the article about the death penalty and children.
    B) Amandla! Elementary Level ELL’s could be used with younger children because it involves singing, which is something that helps young brains grow and remember information.
    C) Empathize, discuss, cooperate, negotiate, build consensus. This will supposedly create a more “just” world.
    D) It advises teachers to encourage children to think about oppression close to home because it forces them to realize that it is not just a problem that is far away. They want for teachers to remind students that victims are not helpless people and that their bravery should be celebrated.

  13. 1) The Krochet Kids International is a fantastic program. It was created to help the lives of many woman and children in Uganda. These woman are taught to crochet and as they make tings they are given money to support their lives and family while trying to get out of poverty. Betty is just one of the successful stories about how much this organization can benefit the lives of people in need.

    2) a) There are more than 2,500 people in prison for life without parole that are under the age of 18.

b)The only one, for me, that is suitable for elementary students is Our World, Our Rights. It is age appropriate and the children need something that is on their level, so it is easy to understand. The other ones would go straight over their heads and the wouldn't comprehend any of it.

c)This book shows children what their rights are and the rights of everyone else in the world. It also explains to them how they can defend their rights. This book shows kids how to empathize, discuss, cooperate, and negotiate with other people. It instills skills necessary for the real world. It's better to start young so these skills can develop over time.

d)Problems are faced all over the world. It is important to educate children of these problems all over the world so they understand how different cultures can be and the many issues that other countries have. It is also important to introduce the problems that are close to home, so they can relate their situation to others to get a sense of how different the world is.

  14. 1.) Krochet for Kids is an inspiring non-profit organization that originated from “kids” or high schoolers with a fun hobby. It is truly great the way that this program helps families and women in Uganda and Peru create brighter futures. Teaching these women to work for something positive and personally help end the cycle of poverty is exponentially helping not only rhem and their communities but aiding the world on a global level. I would imagine the idea to simply give these people hope has already helped them more than we know.

2.) A.) There are 2.500 people in the US who are currently serving life sentences for crimes they committed before the age of 18.

b.) I think the book “Our World, Our rights” is the most age appropriate for elementary school kids. It is centered around the education of elementary-aged children about our human rights. It seems like this book would better explain things that they could interpret at their age.

c.) “Using this Book” tells us that this book is aimed to make these kids aware of their rights and how to identify them more on a daily basis. It is teaching them to be more accepting and aware of how the rights of them and their peers have changed over time and changed around the world. They are learning valuable skills on global acceptance and awareness of civil rights, which help our world’s future be more peaceful.

d.) It tells teachers to include more than one area of the world because it is important for kids to know that rights are a global issue and not only is all around the world but it can be close to home as well. It encourages teachers to tell of people challenging oppression for themselves because that is such an accomplishment and should be praised and may inspire kids to do the same.

  15. 1. Three kids from Washington is what kids have to do with Krocket Kids International. It is an inspiring non-profit organization that was created to change the world. After this program had started, many children and womens lives were changed. This was an opportunity given to children to receive an education and also to women in poverty so that they would be uplifted from poverty.
    2. A.) There are more than 2,500 prisoners in the US serving life sentences for crimes committed before the age of 18.
B.) This book could be used easily for elementary children to really get to know what Human rights are and find out for themselves how to change the world. It also lets them find out their own individual, creative ideas on how to be helpful in our cold world.
C.)The point that comes across from this book can all be summed up into the category of actual human rights. It helps children know and understand the rights of their own countries and others and what they can do to change the problems around us.
D.) In our world, there are more problems than ever and they are only going to get worse so the point in educating all the children is so that they can attempt to see this evil and change it in their own way. This section also encourages educators to show the oppression going on around them also to see that there is trouble not only in other places but very near to them also.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1. The kids were the influence for this organization. A group of kids loved crocheting as a hobby. They decided to take it into their hands and change the world. They loved crocheting anyways, so in their minds, they didn't see a reason not to help others in need and that is how the non-profit organization was formed.
2a. More than 2,500 kids are serving sentences for crimes they committed before the age of 18.
2b. The Kite Runner would be acceptable curriculum for elementary aged children because it is a documentary about the friendship between two Afghanistan boys.
2c. The basic idea of this book is to help children develop skills and feelings that will help them realize that the world is much bigger than what they see and know. There are problems that children their age are facing all around the world that they cannot relate to in the sense of knowing what it's like, but they can understand that it's not an ideal way of life. This will help them want to help others.
2d. It encourages teachers to include more than one aspect of the world because, as much as we would like to, we cannot paint a picture of a perfect America, because it does not exist. If children only think that problems of society exist outside of the world they live in and know, they won't get the full impact and effect of how serious the situation is. I think the point of showing them people that are battling their own oppression themselves is to first show that bad things don't only affect people in groups. It can affect one person only as well. Second, this is a good way to show that we need to fight for ourselves and our rights, and we can't always expect other people who we see as more powerful to do it for us.
